Effect of different species and mixtures of pastures on milk production.

Two Latin-square trials compared fertilized and irrigated pure and mixed tropical pastures. In the 1st trial 22 Holstein-Friesian X Santa Gertrudis cows averaged 9.16-9.36 kg milk daily from pure Rhodes grass and pastures with 50-70% elephant grass, 30-45% pangola grass, or 12-17% Bermuda grass grazed at 3 cows/ha. In the 2nd, 10 Holstein-Friesian X zebu cows averaged 7.46-7.66 kg milk per day from elephant grass cv. candelaria and pastures with 50% Neonotonia wightii, 25-43% other spp., 53-55% pangola grass, or 40-54% Bermuda grass grazed at 2/ha. Differences among pastures in milk yield and composition were not significant in either trial. Differences between pastures in such factors as irrigation intervals, amount of water and DM content were not significant. The milk protein/fat quotient 0.79-0.93 indicated that energy consumption was low, and this seems to be the major limitation on the use of tropical grasses for milk production.
