Meal was prepared from the fruit of Bactris gasipaes ("chontaduro") from tropical areas of Colombia. From 1 day to 10 weeks old, 4 groups of 10 Arbor Acres chickens were given a balanced control diet or a diet of yellow maize with fish meal, yellow maize and chontaduro meal (1:1) with fish meal or chontadura meal with fish meal. At 10 weeks, body weight was 2.605, 1.717, 1.718 and 1.780 kg, respectively, and feed intake for the whole period was 7.563, 7.228 , 7.156 and 7.100 kg. Preparation of chontaduro meal is simple, efficient and of low cost. On average 50% of the weight of fruit can be obtained as meal. The meal contains large amounts of unsaturated fatty acids such as linoleic acid, considered essential in poultry feeding.
