Commissions and advice to Member Countries

FAO’s Animal Production and Health Division (AGA) provides the secretariat of three regional commissions which were established to specifically address livestock sector issues: the European Commission for the Control of Foot-and-Mouth Disease (EUFMD Commission); the Animal Production and Health Commission for Asia and the Pacific (APHCA), and the Commission for Livestock Sector Development for Latin America and the Caribbean (CODEGALAC). The Commissions are fora provided by FAO through which Member countries can sustain a multilateral dialogue about technical and policy issues relating to a specific field within FAO’s broader remit. AGA hosts also the technical secretariat of the Intergovernmental Technical Working Group on Animal Genetic Resources, a subsidiary body of the Commission on Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture.

All Member countries are entitled to call on advisory services of FAO. The Animal Production and Health Division (AGA) is the first point of call for assistance in the areas of animal disease management, livestock production, policy and information. Advice and assistance to Member countries is provided through a range of instruments, such as field projects funded by FAO’s Technical Cooperation Programme (TCP), backstopping and implementing projects funded by other sources, missions by AGA staff members within emergency and relief operations, support to the Special Programme for Food Security, and capacity building programmes.

Over recent years, AGA has progressively shifted emphasis from providing technical assistance via field projects towards informing Member countries of the developments in the livestock sector and their expected impacts and implications in different situations.
