Eleventh Regular Session of the Commission on Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture (CGRFA), FAO, Rome, 11-15 June 2007
To answer the above question – while giving some insights in the current state of Animal Genetic Resources worldwide - five experts were interviewed. These experts, from Brazil, Madagascar, Thailand, Uganda, United Kingdom, work in most regions of the world and contribute to the sustainable use and conservation of livestock breeds. |

Arthur Mariante |
“Trade is a threat to Brazil’s local breeds. Due to our work some breeds are no longer in danger of extinction.”
Arthur Mariante works at the Brazilian Agricultural Research Corporation (EMBRAPA) as project leader of Genetic Resources and Biotechnology; he has been also nominated by his government as National Coordinator for the Management of Animal Genetic Resources and was recently elected by the National Coordinators of other countries of his region as Regional Coordinator for Latin America & the Caribbean. Better trade control can help protect and preserve animal genetic resources, he said.

Mr. Rakotondravao, Chef du Département Recherche Zootechnique et Vétérinaire-Ministère de la Recherche Scientifique, particulaire le Centre National de Recherche Appliquée au Développement Rural (FOFIFA) and he has been also nominated by his government as National Coordinator for the Management of Animal Genetic Resources. Son pays, Madagascar est membre de l'ASARECA (Association pour le renforcement de la recherche en Afrique centrale et orientale).

“When we were hit by Avian Influenza, we were hit by the ‘unknown’. We now need scientific knowledge in the field, while preserving traditional livelihoods.”
Vanida Khumnirdpetch, Animal Scientist, Department of Livestock Development, Ministry of Agriculture and Cooperation, Thailand and she has been also nominated by her government as National Coordinator for the Management of Animal Genetic Resources. She analyses the poultry sector, hard hit by the Avian Influenza, a year ago, and she calls upon her colleagues to become 'cultural' scientists to serve better their community.

“Very few companies run livestock genetic across the world. Live stock keepers’ rights are needed to protect livestock and livelihoods.”
Patrick Mulvany (UK) is Senior Policy Adviser to Practical Action (NGO) - He believes in North-South cooperation among NGOs and Civil Society Organizations.

“We want to create marketing initiatives for traditional breeds.”
Mike Roper (UK) is National Coordinator for the Management of Animal Genetic Resources (Department for Environment, Food and Environmental Affairs). Moreover, he is Chair of the Steering Committee of the European Regional Focal Point for the Management of Animal Genetic Resources. Sharing experience across Europe is enhancing a true spirit of cooperation, he told us.

Thomas Loquang |
“Veterinary services have been privatized - drugs are too expensive.”
Thomas Loquang is a Ugandan livestock keeper and representative of the pastoralist community of Karamoja, at about 450 km North East from Kampala, Uganda. The community depends very much on indigenous knowledge for taking care of their livestock, including animal health and production. Thomas urges for support in conserving Karamoja’s indigenous breeds and strengthening livestock keepers' rights through better infrastructure and veterinary services.
