Organic pig production in Europe(Dietze; University of Kassel)

Pig sector reviews at national level

The challenges facing the pig production sector are diverse. Sustainable sector growth requires commensurate development of related infrastructure, but in many countries such development is not keeping pace with sector needs. This discrepancy, combined with the growing importance of pig production in the livelihoods of more and more people, makes the sector a vulnerable component in the economies of several countries. Uncertain availability of feed, insufficient sanitation, poor husbandry and lack of sound veterinary services are among the factors that lead to poor animal health, threats to public health and loss of environmental integrity. Improved understanding of the sector and the related market chains will help in the development of strategies for development, including disease-control measures.

The country reviews were commissioned by the Animal Production and Health Division (AGA) of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO). They are intended as a resource document for those seeking information on the pig sector at the national level. They are not exhaustive: some topics are only partially covered or not covered at all, and the document will be supplemented and updated on an ongoing basis. Contributions and feedback are welcomed by the authors and by AGA.
