Abstract
EnglishThe study was conducted in six dryland districts, namely: Katakwi, Moroto, Sironko, Ntungamo, Mbarara and Nakasongola. Prior to field visits, a review of literature related to best practices was carried out in NAP, PFI, MAAIF, NEMA and district reports. A questionnaire based on WOCAT format and UNDP guidelines was used to collect information in the field. Field visits were carried out for two days in each district, during which meetings were held with the heads of technical departments, NGOs, CBOs and the private sector. The farming communities were then visited, interviewed and their responses noted on questionnaires. Since the information collected was generally descriptive, no rigorous statistical analysis was applied. A total of 10 best practices were identified and documented. In conclusion, the study revealed a variety of best practices being implemented to combat desertification in Uganda's drylands. However, for most of these practices to succeed, they should be tagged to provision of direct benefits to the communities, including raising their incomes. Local capacity of the beneficiaries should also be enhanced to effectively implement these practices.
