The archive
FAO and WHO assure that the considerable body of publications from JECFA is available as an easy accessible on-line archive. Printed publications from more recent meetings continue to be available from FAO and WHO publication departments.
Summary of Evaluations Performed by the Joint FAO/WHO Expert Committee on Food Additives (JECFA)
This database provides references for all food chemicals which have been evaluated by JECFA since the first meeting in 1956. Maintenance of the database is joint responsibility of both secretariats, ILSI International gives technical support. The introduction gives users more background on the work of JECFA. Definitions of toxicological and other terms used by JECFA are as well available. Please note that there are no plans to update the printed version.
List of publications: WHO - FAO
All reports and other documents resulting from previous meetings of JECFA are numbered consecutively for reference purposes. This list provides - where available - links to on-line publications.
Summaries and Conclusions from previous meetings
Electronic summary reports of the main conclusions and evaluations are published
after each meeting of JECFA so that the information is disseminated quickly.
These drafts are subject to further technical editing and their content is
inccorporated into the report published in the WHO Technical Report Series.
WHO Technical Report Series
Discussions and recommendations from each meeting of JECFA are published in a concise report which is published by the Joint Secretariat as a volume of the WHO Technical Report Series.
WHO Food Additive Series
The toxicological monographs describe comprehensively the data used by the committee during the risk assessment. They are published in the WHO Food Additive Series (also available electronically on INCHEM).
Compendium of Food Additive and Flavouring Agents Specifications:
All current JECFA specifications for food additives and flavouring agents are available in an on-line edition.
Volume 4 of the Combined Compendium of Food Additive Specifications “Analytical
Methods, Test Procedures and Laboratory Solutions”, used by and referenced in
the JECFA specifications, is an integral part of both online editions.
Chemical and Technical Assessments
These documents provide basic information on the identity, purity and use of a food additive, as it is related to its risk
assessment.
Residues of some veterinary drugs in animals and foods
Monographs on veterinary drug residues are published in the FAO JECFA Monographs series from the 66th meeting onwards. Veterinary drug residue monographs from previous meetings were published in the FAO Food and Nutrition Paper series No. 41 (16 volumes).
An online edition is available which can also be searched in Arabic, Chinese, French and Spanish.
Workbook for statistical evaluation of residue depletion
data
JECFA reviewed at its 66th meeting, dedicated to veterinary drugs, the comments
received in the public consultation on the features and documentation of a
software-based workbook that uses a statistical approach evaluation of marker
residue depletion data when estimating maximum residue limits (MRLs) for veterinary
drugs. The Committee concluded that all respondents agreed that the mathematical/statistical
approach was scientifically sound and that the Committee would use it in the
future whenever is would be considered appropriate. More information here.
