Consumers should have adequate knowledge of food hygiene to enable them to use food properly and to prevent contamination and growth or survival of foodborne pathogens by storing and preparing it correctly. The consumer is the last important link in the food chain for food safety.

In addition to maintaining the safety of food through home preparation, consumers also facilitate increased emphasis on food safety along the food chain by exerting consumer pressure for food of adequate quality and safety.
