ISS Summary of Proceedings for the International Scientific Symposium on Measurement and Assessment of Food Deprivation and Undernutrition (FAO and the Secretariat of the IAWG on FIVIMS)
Accurate, reliable and timely measurement of the prevalence of hunger, malnutrition, food insecurity and vulnerability is required in order to monitor progress in hunger reduction. In June 2002, the Secretariat of the IAWG on FIVIMS, the Food and Nutrition Division, in collaboration with the Economic Analysis and Statistics Divisions of FAO, convened a symposium to discuss methodologies for achieving this goal. The ISS summary proceedings include abstracts of keynote papers presented on the FAO Methodology, Household Expenditure Surveys, Individual Food Intake Surveys, Anthropometric Surveys and Qualitative Measures of food insecurity, as well as a paper advocating a “suite” approach combining the above mentioned complementary methodologies. Each abstract is followed by a discussion group report highlighting key points and recommendations for action. Lastly, the proceedings record two sessions dedicated to the perspectives of international and national users of these methodologies. Hartwig de Haen, Assistant Director General for the Economic and Social Department, provided opening and closing remarks. The executive summary and the summary volume of International Scientific Symposium proceedings in English, Spanish, French are available in electronic version on this website. Release of the full proceedings including all the background papers, in English only, will follow in early May.
