Nutrition education in schools

Children must be considered as tomorrow's adult consumers. Eating habits are learnt early and schools can play an important role in promoting healthy and sustainable food selection and dietary patterns.

FAO's approach to nutrition education in schools aims to create positive attitudes, skills, and promotes lifelong healthy eating behaviours. School-based activities include school gardens, food processing, visits to food shops and markets, food safety and hygiene and food preparation.

The Nutrition and Consumer Protection Division:

  • Develops and promotes innovative nutrition strategies and resource materials for use by schools, including garden-based learning.
  • Assists countries to develop comprehensive school-based food and nutrition education curricula and educational materials.
  • Builds national capacity in nutrition education in schools.
  • Supports the development of nutrition standards aimed at the provision of nutritious and safe foods in schools, including local and indigenous foods.
