Subject: paper 2.c. Selection of experts

Dear all,
Thank you for the interesting and lively discussion so far.
My name is Mary Kenny. I am a Nutrition Officer (food quality/safety) in the Food Quality and Standards Service, FAO. I am also currently assigned to the FAO/WHO Secretariat overseeing the review of the provision of scientific advice. This message relates to paper 2.c. on selection of experts, and is sent on behalf of the FAO/WHO Secretariat.
The many and varied comments received on the selection of experts are appreciated by FAO/WHO, and will be considered in the next stages of the review process. While there is still some time remaining in the e-forum, I would like to propose two issues related to this topic, upon which you may wish to provide additional comment.
They are:
1) Adequate recognition for the work of experts on FAO/WHO expert committees and adhoc meetings
2) Difficulties faced by experts in sharing data, due to intellectual property rights (also relates to paper 3.c. on data).
These issues have been raised, as some consider they hinder experts in participating in FAO/WHO activities in developing scientific advice. What are your views?
