Note from the Moderator: the following message from Dr Trujillo has been edited. Dr Trujillo has approved the edited version.
Dr Acela Cruz Trujillo is Head of the Department of Hygiene and Nutrition in the School of Advanced Studies in Hotel Management and Tourism, Havana, Cuba: Departamento de Higiene y Nutrición, Escuela de Altos Estudios de Hotelería y Turismo, La Habana, Cuba. Her e-mail address is acela@eaeht.tur.cu
The comments concern Paper 1a, section 2, particularly points 1-5.
Dr Trujillo notes that when developing advice on chemicals, microorganisms in food, biotechnology and other subjects, FAO/WHO should consider conditions and realities in developing countries (e.g. data/conditions/foods produced/specific pesticides). Similarly, when Codex develops international standards, it needs to consider the conditions and realities in developing countries. It should also take account of regional differences.
Difficulties for developing countries include limitations in access to specialist publications and in technical capacity. Another problem concerns the differences that sometimes exist between national and international criteria.
