Dear Colleagues

I am a member of JECFA and have worked with FAO on various issues. I commented earlier. In response to Mary Kenny's comments about incentives, I do honestly think that FAO and WHO need to think seriously about making some reimbusements for the work members do outside the meetings, and also for the other contributions that many experts make to consultations, etc. It remains a privilege to be able to help, but time is increasingly scarce.

I also return to the need to make practical changes rather than simply to construct more committees, to write more papers, and to rehearse again the arguments about the need for better interplay between committees. A lot can be done to improve the current systems by putting in place necessary reforms such as declarations of interest, improved Committee management, better teamworking etc.

The comments have been flowing thick and fast and I for one have not managed to read all of them. It is also a pity that so few committee members seem to have been involved as they are the people who see the way the system actually works on the ground. In any event I hope there will now be a careful evaluation of the various contributions and a summary of the important issues so that everyone can see what is to be taken forward into future discussions.
