Mr. Chairman and fellow participants, Once again it is my pleasure to address you on behalf of FAO, however I find it hard to believe that five days of our meeting have passed already and we now have only the final and more relaxed part to look forward to, namely the drive back to Thimphu, some shopping and the closing dinner before we disperse tomorrow. Over the last five days we have covered a range of topics and issues. A large number of interesting papers have been presented; we have had interesting discussions and had two very enjoyable days of field visits. Today we have concluded with a summing up session during which we have dealt largely with WG matters, which I hope have been concluded to the satisfaction of all. Tsering Gyaltsen will shortly present the meeting resolutions. We trust that everyone has enjoyed the 4-5 days spent here in Wangdue and that all have found something of interest in the various papers presented. We must remember that while the WG is presently sponsored by FAO this is your WG. Its future depends on you. Some key issues arising and points of interest: · Remember that there is an electronic Bulletin Board on the FAO Grassland Web page for this WG. I hope that you will visit it, use it and send papers and information for posting there. · We have successfully completed the range studies and I hope that the manuscript of the book “Transhumant Grazing Systems in Temperate Areas” will be ready before the end of the year. I need some feedback from National Coordinators regarding contributors and I hope that when the book finally comes out that you will recognize your work. · We hope that access to e-mail will improve communications both within the WG and between the WG and FAO. · We have agreed to work together within the TAPAFON Fodder Network; we hope this work will go forward successfully for the benefit of the many small farm families throughout the Hindu Kush Himalaya. · We look forward to the publication of the proceedings and wish Tsering and his team all the best as they focus on the editing of the large number of papers. · We have agreed in principal to another meeting in 2004. While FAO can make no commitment at this stage it is certain that funding levels will be lower, so I encourage the WG to focus on ways of reducing costs or sharing costs (as we have discussed earlier) to ensure WG sustainability. · We have agreed on “Fodder Crops” as a main theme with various sub-themes for 2004 meeting. Sometimes contributors misunderstand what is wanted. In order to ensure that papers really address the issues as expected and to ensure high quality papers I suggest in future that final drafts of papers should be required 3 months in advance of the meeting to ensure proper screening and re-drafting as necessary. ·
I remind you that the IRC will be held
in ·
Also, you may be aware that the IGC
will be held in It reminds for me to thank the many persons involved in the organization and implementation of this training course, and in particular: Mr. Tsering Gyaltsen who with his team has taken the major role in ensuring that all arrangements were made and that hotels, buses and planes were booked/reserved. Without his untiring efforts (in addition to his own already heavy workload) this meeting would not have been possible, Truly it has been an outstanding meeting and we will all leave with fond memories of Bhutan, its people and the many kindnesses shown to us. - The FAO Office under OIC Mr Phintsho Dorji has provided excellent support. -
