Plant breeding, including elements of biotechnology, represents an opportunity to enhance agricultural production, improve rural livelihoods and protect the environment. AGPC initiatives include:
Promotion of plant breeding in developing countries with the participation of the farming communities, especially in marginal areas
Broadening the genetic base of crops and allowing farmers greater access to crop biodiversity
Production of Plant Breeding Newsletter, an e-mail bulletin on applied plant breeding, sponsored by FAO and Cornell University
Production of Crop Biotech Bites, an on-line journal hosted by Ecoport, to aid policy makers on issues related to biotechnology
Organization and support of plant breeding and biotechnology conferences and workshops
Development of a study on Genetic Use Restriction Technologies (GURTs) for conservation and sustainable use of agricultural biodiversity
Preparation of a case study on the potential of agricultural biotechnology in developing countries and its possible impacts on food security and poverty alleviation
Preparation of a guide to crop biotechnology for administrators and policy makers in Sub-Saharan Africa, including international instruments associated with GM crops
Development with ISNAR of a decision-support system for biotechnology policymakers
