Range Rehabilitation and Establishment of a Wildlife Reserve in the Syrian Steppe (GCP/SYR/003/ITA)
The Al-Badia steppe, covering about 55% the the country's area, has been subject to widespread deterioration of the rangelands and loss of wildlife habitat. Being the main grazing land, Al-Badia is the major supporter of Syria's livestock sector. Starting in 1996, the project concentrates on the rehabilitation of the rangelands and on improving land productivity and living standards. AGSP has developed a framework for production data collection in order to monitor any rangeland improvement. Now in the second phase, a livestock production survey has been implemeted providing data on major economic aspects of livestock production. Covering ten percent of the target population, the survey has provided in-depth knowledge of the livestock production and living conditions of the Bedouin cooperative members. During the present severe drought, the need for this type of data has been clearly demonstrated. Information regarding the drought impact on costs and prices can be provided.
