ENHANCING SMALL FARMER LIVELIHOODS

The commercialisation of small farm production is a critical rural development issue throughout the developing world and in transition economies. Small farmers face unprecedented opportunities and risks as a result of market liberalisation, privatisation of agricultural services, and globalisation of trade. It is necessary to strengthen the capacity of public sector and civil society organizations to establish enabling conditions for small farmer development and enhance farmers' managerial and entrepreneurial skills.

The objective of this project is to improve the support provided by public sector and civil society organisations to small farmers so that farmers can respond rapidly and effectively to new market opportunities, make necessary adjustments in livelihoods strategies, minimise risks associated with commercialisation and globalisation, and make sound decisions with respect to enterprise management and resource allocation. The longer term goal is to enhance the livelihoods of small farmers, in particular through higher incomes and competitiveness.

The project generates a diverse range of products targeted to policy makers, field programme managers, programme designers, field agents and other support service providers. Publications and information products being generated through the project cover strategies and policy guidance on small farmer competitiveness, commercialization, enterprise development and diversification into alternative livelihoods. Promotional booklets are being developed on small farmer income opportunities. Training materials are being developed to improve farmers' skills for farm planning, technology choice, financial management and marketing. Technical guidelines are being developed to improve support services and field programmes relating to farm business management, sustainable mechanisation, post harvest technologies, financial management, and marketing.
