Our work on food processing is geared toward assisting countries to improve the efficiency and productivity of their processing enterprises, the quality and competitiveness of their outputs and to identify viable processing opportunities and options for maximising the use of their raw agricultural outputs. We work in consultation and collaboration with member countries to address their specific needs through the provision of advisory support, technical information and capacity building activities. Our capacity building activities are implemented through field projects and training programmes. Where appropriate, we promote the adoption of value chain approaches.
In order to address the diverse capacities and information requirements of member countries, we document and disseminate information on a broad range of technologies and technological options for processing, as well as for the processing of specific food and downstream processed products. A very comprehensive scope is covered in our information outputs which are distributed both electronically and in hard copy, and which target a very diverse audience from the researcher through to the small entrepreneur.
Micro-, small- and medium entrepreneurs who are the main processors of food and agricultural products in developing countries are the primary beneficiaries of our direct technical assistance provided at the field level.
