Proteins are large molecules made of amino acids. Proteins are found in animal and plant foods. Proteins are the main structural constituents of the cells and tissues of the body. Muscles and organs are largely made of proteins. Proteins are necessary for growth and development of the body; for body maintenance and the repair and replacement of worn out or damaged tissues; to produce metabolic and digestive enzymes; and they are an essential constituent of certain hormones. Expert Consultation on protein qualityFAO hosted an expert meeting on protein quality in Auckland, New Zealand in March 2011. The report should be released in the summer of 2012.
