The Southern Rift Valley Tsetse Eradication Project (STEP) has made significant progress in recent years in suppressing tsetse flies in an area of 25,000 km² in Ethiopia. With the support of the FAO/IAEA Joint Division, sterile males of the species Glossina fuscipes reared in the Kality insectary are being released weekly from aircraft in the Deme Basin.
