International Symposium on Agroecology for Food Security and Nutrition

FAO will facilitate an “International Symposium on Agroecology for Food Security and Nutrition” from 18th to 19th September to capture recent scientific knowledge and promote open dialogue while showcasing existing experiences and programs on Agroecology.

The International Symposium on Agroecology that will take place in Rome will contribute to raise awareness of Agroecology and promote a better understanding of its connections to sustainable production practices, sustainable food systems and nutrition. The Event will embrace discussion on the wide array of economic, environmental and social aspects that Agroecology encapsulates. It will provide space to debate how agroecological concepts, and practices contribute to the three main FAO goals of: eradicating hunger, food insecurity and malnutrition; eliminating poverty and the driving forward of economic and social progress for all; and the sustainable management and utilization of natural resources, including land, water, air, climate and genetic resources for the benefit of present and future generations. The event has been developed in the framework of FAO’s strategic objective two to “Increase and improve provision of Goods and Services from Agriculture, Forestry, and Fisheries in a sustainable manner” and in the framework of sustainable production intensification.

The Symposium will address the many tenets of Agroecology with contributions from a large number of international experts, each one of them bringing a very diverse set of valuable knowledge and experience to share and discuss with the collective intelligence that will be gathered in Rome on this occasion; and inspire a beneficial outreach. The specific topics that will be addressed over the course of the Symposium include among others: Agroecological approaches to water and soils; creating virtuous cycles; building resilience; and implementing programs promoting Agroecological approaches. Partners of the International Symposium on Agroecology are international organizations, universities and research institutions, including CIRAD and INRA, civil society and farmer’s organizations. Speakers have a worldwide recognized competence and represent International organizations, CGIAR centres, International Universities, Private and Public Sector.

The symposium will:

  • Provide a forum for taking stock of the current state of science and practices of Agroecology as well as initiatives and underway around the world to elaborate agroecological approaches
  • Initiate a dialogue on Agroecology’s contribution to best practices, and its potential scalability regarding “possible pathways towards a more sustainable future”
  • Contribute to the development of tools, projects, pilot activities in selected countries on agroecological practices and approaches within FAO’s Str. Workplan
  • Contribute to the development of an international framework for research on Agroecology, with consideration of economic, social and environmental aspects in developed and developing countries
  • Provide a springboard for potential follow-up activities.
