Through its long-established contacts with national governments in
the region, FAO has been in the position to give assistance and advice
to national and regional governments from the local level upto the
regional level. Frameworks have been developed in collaboration between
FAO and several national governments that will guide the agriculture
rehabilitation process. FAO was also involved in the development of
framework for other sectors (notably fisheries and forestry) and has
moved into the facilitation of people-centered Integrated Coastal
Area Management in some of the affected regions.
For the issue of salinity a regional approach was adopted, which culminated
in a regional framework for action for recovery of salt-affected soils
and agriculture in a broader perspective. The regional framework can
