The International Code of Conduct on the Distribution and Use of Pesticides is the worldwide guidance document on pesticide management for all public and private entities engaged in, or associated with, the distribution and use of pesticides. It was adopted in 1985 by the Twenty-fifth Session of the FAO Conference and since then has been amended in 1989 and in 2002. The Code is designed to provide standards of conduct and to serve as a point of reference in relation to sound pesticide management practices, in particular for government authorities and the pesticide industry.

The Code of Conduct is supported by a set of technical guidelines that are developed by the Panel of Experts on Pesticide Management.

Since 2007 highly hazardous pesticides are a special focus area for FAO in implementing the Code of Conduct.

Internationally, FAO is involved in the activities of the Strategic Approach to International Chemical Management (SAICM) and is a participating organization in the Inter-Organisation Proramme for the Sound Management of Chemicals (IOMC).
