Good Agricultural Practices for Greenhouse Systems

From 14 to 19 June 2009, Quebec City and Université Laval hosted the International Symposium on High Technology for Greenhouse Systems-Greensys 2009. The meeting focused on energy and environment, sustainability, greenhouse design and management, substrate and hydroponics, controlled environment agriculture including space cultivation, cultural practices and plant protection. In view of the scope of this symposium, the Plant Production and Protection Division supported the organization and participated, along with the two coordinators of FAO working groups for greenhouse horticulture production in the Mediterranean and South Eastern Europe regions, in a workshop on good agricultural practices (GAP) for greenhouse horticulture production. The workshop which gathered 21 leading scientists in the field of greenhouse systems aimed at reviewing on-going activities of FAO regional working groups on greenhouse horticulture and to discuss the modalities for developing guidelines on GAP for greenhouse horticulture production in the Mediterranean and South Eastern Europe regions. The workshop participants unanimously agreed to support and contribute to this initiative and a draft document on guidelines is expected in December 2009. The guidelines on GAP will be presented in a FAO publication.
