The United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization and the Conservation Technology Information Center are hosting an international discussion about the potential of conservation agriculture systems and sequestering carbon in contributing significantly to the mitigation of climate change. Experts from around the world will meet in West Lafayette, Indiana, on OCt. 28, 29 & 30, 2008, to present data about the potential for carbon sequestration through good agricultural practices, such as no-tillage cropping systems, the methods and models for assessment of agriculture-based carbon credit trading, and techniques and practices for verification.Included will be the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) secretariat on carbon finance and how it can assist in enabling GHG agricultural mitigation and carbon sink actions and measures, with particular reference to the Clean Development Mechanism (financial mechanism under the Kyoto Protocol). The outcome of this meeting will be a clear direction about the steps necessary to assess the potential in existing global carbon offset market and how these can enable agriculture in using no-till and/or conservation agriculture through carbon finance.
To that end, participants will outline what carbon markets already exist, their environmental integrity and what information or capacity building is still required for further participation in these markets by potential participants. |
