Extraordinary Meetings of the Conferences of the Parties on enhancing cooperation and coordination among the Basel, Stockholm and Rotterdam Conventions


The simultaneous extraordinary meetings of the Conferences of the Parties to the Basel, Rotterdam and Stockholm conventions will be held in Bali, Indonesia, at the Bali International Convention Centre in, Nusa Dua, from 22 to 24 February 2010, in coordination with the eleventh special session of the Governing Council/Global Ministerial Environment Forum (GC/GMEF) of the United Nations Environment Programme which will be held at the same venue from 24 to 26 February 2010.

The simultaneous extraordinary meetings will be opened at 10 a.m. on Monday, 22 February by their respective presidents: Mr. Gusti Muhammad Hatta (Indonesia), President of the Conference of the Parties to the Basel Convention; Ms. Judy Beaumont (South Africa), President of the Conference of the Parties to the Rotterdam Convention; and Mr. Gholamhossein Dehghani (Islamic Republic of Iran), who has replaced Mr. Alireza Moaiyeri (Islamic Republic of Iran) as President of the Conference of the Parties of the Stockholm Convention.

The Conferences of the Parties will be called to take decisions on the following:

  1. Joint activities among Secretariats and on a draft workplan for the development of a clearing house mechanism serving the conventions
  2. Joint managerial functions. A study of the feasibility and cost implications of establishing joint coordination or a joint head of the Basel, Rotterdam and Stockholm Conventions will be discussed.
  3. Joint services established on an interim basis of joint services for the secretariats and on the costs and organizational implications of establishing joint services for the secretariats
  4. Synchronization of the budget cycles of the three conventions
  5. Joint audits of the accounts of the secretariats of the three conventions
  6. Review mechanism and follow up of the work on enhancing coordination and cooperation processes between the three conventions
