The FAO Programme on the Prevention and Disposal of Obsolete Pesticides is working with developing countries, donor agencies and industry to deal with the environmental and public health implications of this aspect of agriculture.
The Programme is committed to producing a reasonable indicative inventory of obsolete pesticides stockpiles around the world. Countries are cooperating with the Programme in drawing up a global inventory on obsolete pesticide stockpiles.
International assistance is usually needed to dispose of the obsolete pesticide stockpiles identified. The Programme often helps to search for international financial assistance.
The FAO Programme has developed an extensive training programme, published guidelines and other resources for countries to effectively and safely conduct the necessary activities to dispose of stockpiles and implement specific measures to avoid their re-accumulation. In this regard, the programme also provides technical and legal advice to make sure that obsolete pesticide projects are carried out effectively.
