The Project is funded by the FAO / Turkey Partnership Programme (FTPP) for food security and rural poverty reduction in Central Asia. The overall objective of the Project is to assist the countries of Central Asia, Sub-Regional Office for Central Asia (SEC) Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkey, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan with a specific focus on Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, and Uzbekistan, to reduce risks to health and environment from obsolete pesticide stockpiles and from pesticides in current and future use.

 

The Sub-Regional Office for Central Asia (SEC) and the Pesticide Risk Reduction Group(AGPMC) jointly organize an inception regional workshop which was taken place in Turkey in October 2010. The workshop was to review the project objectives, expected outputs, FAO and Government inputs and update the project work plan. During this workshop, the participants gave presentations on current status related to pests and pesticides management in their countries, discussed obstacles related to the project implementation and developed a revised project work plan to improve:

 

1.  the Project implementation, plan the inventory of obsolete stocks and associated wastes,

2.  review the institutional and regulatory framework;

3.  assess the needs fro pesticide management capacity buildings,

4.  Pesticide reduction, Communication and awareness rising.

 

In addition, recommended was FAO SEC and the AGPMC should assist the countries (Turkey, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan and Tajikistan) in the formulation of a regional project on pest and pesticide management to be submitted to GEF5 for co-financing.
