Rice in FAO

 

Rice is not only important for food security, but is also an important economic commodity, a crop that consumes a lot of water and contributes to significant amount of greenhouse gasses. Rice diversity is furthermore important for plant breeding and nutritional security, and rice fields host a wide range of terrestrial and aquatic biodiversity. This places rice as an important crop in many different division in FAO: plant production and protection; nutrition and consumer protection; trade and markets; land and water; rural infrastructure and agro-industries; climate, energy and tenure; fisheries and aquaculture resources use and conservation; and knowledge exchange, research and extension. Furthermore, rice plays an important role in different international treaties, conventions, commission and advisory bodies, which include the Commission on Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture, the International Plant Protection Convention and the International Treaty on Plant Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture. In order to coordinate the work on rice in FAO, the International Rice Commission is currently composed of representatives of these different divisions.
