The FAO Global System on Plant Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture

The FAO Global System on Plant Genetic Resources for Food and Agriuclture is envisaged as a set of policy instruments and mechanisms that can ensure safe conservation and promote the availability and sustainable use of plant genetic resources by providing a flexible framework for sharing benefits and burdens.

The development of the Global System began in 1983 with the establishment of the Commission on Plant Genetic Resources (now the Commission on Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture - CGRFA).

The Global System is monitored by the CGRFA, and its Intergovernmental Technical Working Group on Plant Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture, and by the International Treaty on PGRFA.
