In recent years, ranchers have started to manage silvopastoral systems in order to increase the productivity of their lands while promoting the conservation of natural resources. In Central America, isolated trees are a common feature within silvipasture. Recent studies indicate that these trees play a major role in the survival of wildlife species by providing scarce resources and refuge.
Women play an important role in activities dealing with livestock such as care and management or transformation and marketing of certain livestock products. Livestock ownership patterns appear more equitable than that of other assets. Gender aspects are to be understood as "practical needs" and "strategic needs".
