Announcing the Sixth Agricultural Ontology Service Workshop on "Ontologies: the more practical issues and experiences", July 25-28, 2005, Vila Real, Portugal
The Agricultural Ontology Service (AOS) Initiative was launched by FAO in 2001 and the first of the series of workshops took place in November of the same year. The goal of the AOS initiative is to discuss common semantic standards for enhanced web applications and improving access to agricultural information resources. The activities within the AOS initiative are fully documented on this website.
The Sixth AOS workshop will provide an opportunity for information management specialists to learn about the AOS and to strengthen partnerships in collectively building the AOS. One of the major aims for this workshop is to provide an international forum to share and exchange information about the use of ontologies to address the problems of accessing multilingual information. The objective is to share experiences in creating, managing, updating and using ontologies and other Knowledge Organization Systems (KOS) in the management of digital resources. The Agricultural Ontology Service (AOS) workshops
bring together metadata and ontology experts and researchers interested
in the AOS project. The fifth AOS Workshop builds on the successes of
previous workshops held in Rome, Oxford, Florida, and Copenhagen.
The fifth AOS workshop will provide an opportunity for information management
specialists in Asia to learn about the AOS and to strengthen partnerships
in building the AOS.
The workshop will focus on:
• Sharing new developments in the field of metadata and ontology,
• Finding out how to leverage these developments in practice in agricultural
information management.

3rd ECDL Workshop on Web Archives in conjunction with the 7th European Conference on Research and Advanced Technologies for Digital Libraries Trondheim, Norway, August 21st, 2003
The workshop will provide a cross domain overview on active research and practice in the emergent domain of web archiving and studies on effective usage of this type of archive. It is also intended to provide a forum for interaction among librarians, archivists, academic researchers and industrial researchers interested in establishing effective methods and developing improved solution for Web archiving. The 6th Networked Knowledge Organization systems/Sources (NKOS) Workshop, focused on the transformation of traditional knowledge organization systems to new forms of knowledge representation such as ontologies, topic maps, and semantic Web components. The theme "Reengineering AGROVOC to Ontologies - Steps towards better semantic structure" was presented in this workshop.

The NOVA (Nordic Forestry, Veterinary and Agricultural) Libraries together with Food and Agricultural Organizations (FAO) of the United Nations organized the Nordic Agricultural Ontology Service (AOS) Workshop. The workshop was held on Friday February 28, 2003 at the Royal Veterinary and Agricultural University, the Danish Veterinary and Agricultural Library in Copenhagen, Denmark.
The workshop was of interest to librarians, computer scientists, information managers, subject specialists within agriculture and development. The invitation was also extended to anyone involved in collecting, organizing and managing information in any domain of agriculture and natural resources and to specialists working with ontologies and thesauri in other subject areas different from agriculture.
The AOS project is a coordinated effort to develop an internationally shared ontology of agricultural concepts. The AOS project aims to provide guidelines and assist with tools and methodologies that can be used to develop ontologies at the local level that can be distributed and shared with other users interested in agriculture and natural resources.

A presentation was made on behalf of FAO entitled "The AGRICULTURAL ONTOLOGY SERVICE.A Comprehensive Framework for Building Multilingual Domain Ontologies:Creating an ontology on .Food Safety, Animal and Plant Health.(OFsAPH) ". The presentation describes the state of knowledge organization to date, the benefits to be expected from ontologies, and a detailed description of the steps to take in creating a "core" ontology.

The ongoing project entitled "A Framework for Multilingual Domain Ontologies" was presented by the co-authors at the Dublin Core Conference held in Florence from 13 to 17 October this year. The use of ontologies covered specifically the domains of Food Safety, Animal and Plant Health. Click to see the presentation entitled "Food Safety Ontology Prototype ".
An exhaustive paper illustrating work being carried out in FAO on multilingual domain ontologies, entitled "A Comprehensive Framework for Building Multilingual Domain Ontologies: Creating a Prototype Biosecurity Ontology" was presented by one of the co-authors. This ontology highlights key aspects in Food Safety, Animal and Plant Health, and is part of the ongoing effort to establish a multilingual domain ontology for a biosecurity portal.

Second Workshop on the Agricultural Ontology Service (AOS) Project

The 'AOS Users Focus Group' workshop was held on Thursday 24th January 2002 at the Plant Sciences Library of the Oxford University Library Services.
The theme of the workshop was 'Shaping the AOS to meet user needs'. The workshop was a follow-up to the first AOS Workshop which was held in FAO, Rome, from14-15 November 2001.
The 'AOS Users Focus Group' workshop provided an opportunity to describe the AOS and its potential applications to potential users and to gather feedback from information professionals in agriculture and related subject areas.
The workshop began with a presentation on the AOS Project. Following the presentation participants conducted 'breakout' discussion sessions. Read the AOS Users 'Focus Group' Workshop report.
The workshop was conducted together with the second AOS Launch Group meeting which took place on Friday 25th January 2002 in Wallingford.

The first of its kind, XML 2001 marked the arrival of XML schema languages and a new competition between the W3C and ISO for XML standardization. The conference attracted a high calibre audience of "key decision-makers and players from corporate, government, and non-profit organizations, exploring new ways to deploy XML technology to streamline their operations".
A paper was presented on behalf of the AOS project initiative, entitled "The Agricultural Ontology Server: A Tool for Facilitating Access to Knowledge", on behalf of the AOS project initiative.

First Workshop on the Agricultural Ontology Service (AOS) Project

The first Agricultural Ontology Workshop was held in FAO from November 14 to 15, 2001. An open invitation was sent to interested potential partners. The goal of the workshop was to discuss the AOS concept paper which was prepared by the AGRIS/CARIS and Documentation Group of FAO and to explore the possibility of launching a project in collaboration with ontology experts and potential partners.
Workshop participants (individuals and representative from various organisations) expressed their interest and support in the AOS initiative. The workshop recommended to proceed with the initiative and proposed the formulation of the AOS Launch Group with the mandate to follow up activities and prepare work plan and project proposal document.
