DC 2004 - Metadata across languages and cultures - 11-14 October, Shanghai, China

The fourth in a series of conferences previously held in Tokyo, Florence, and Seattle, the international conference on Dublin Core and Metadata applications (DC 2004), examined a broad range of metadata applications, with a view towards improving interoperability across boundaries of language, culture, and communities of practice. Tutorials were offered, to provide an introduction to metadata for non-experts. FAO - AGRIS/CARIS & Documentation Group presented a paper entitled "PDFMetadata exchange without pain: the AGRIS AP to harvest and exchange quality metadata".

DC 2003 - Supporting Communities of Discourse and Practice - Metadata Research and Applications. 28 September - 2 October, Seattle, Washington, USA

The Conference Track consists of contributed papers in both original and applied research. The scope of matters addressed by the contributed papers is not confined to the Dublin Core metadata element set but extends across all metadata schemas and application domains. AGRIS Multi-Host Search System: Using Dublin Core to homogenise distributed databases

Dublin Core Metadata Initiative (DCMI) Tools Workshop, 20 - 22 June 2001, Osnabrück, Germany

This presentation on the AGRIS Multi-Host Search System entitled the 'AGRIS Multi-Host Search System Using XML and Dublin Core to homogenise distributed databases' , explained the importance of using the XML format, and Dublin Core element sets in distributed database search. It underlines the reasons why FAO has opted to choose such technologies, and illustrates the ongoing initiative of AGRIS/CARIS and documentation group's effort to propose metadata standards that would facilitate electronic publishing and information retrieval in the agricultural sector.

New Technologies Agriculture standards

Information Management Standards for Electronic Publishing in Agriculture, Practical Workshop, 6 November, 2000, Brussels

How should international agricultural information services react to the drastic changes in the information landscape, and what developments can be expected in the coming years? An informal meeting was held in Brussels on 6 November 2000 with a number of organisations working in Agricultural information and Web standards. The workshop addressed the need for a minimum core set of information management standards to facilitate access, retrieval, and information exchange within the Agricultural Information community. Hugo Besemer of Wageningen University introduced the opportunities afforded by XML. The Dublin Core model was introduced by OCLC (Online Computer Library Center, USA) with an example methodology, and Johannes Keizer from FAO introduced the current status of FAO retrieval systems in relation to cross database searching and the present and proposed use of AGROVOC.

During the Workshop, a presentation was given by Stuart Weibel, senior research scientist at the OCLC, entitled "The Dublin Core Metadata Initiative, the Resource Description Framework, and PURLs"
