Fifth Agricultural Ontology Service (AOS) Workshop
27 - 29 April 2004, Beijing, China
The Agricultural Ontology Service (AOS) workshops
bring together metadata and ontology experts and researchers interested
in the AOS project. The fifth AOS Workshop builds on the successes of
previous workshops held in Rome, Oxford, Florida, and Copenhagen. The fifth AOS workshop will provide an opportunity
for information management specialists in Asia to learn about the AOS
and to strengthen partnerships in building the AOS.
The workshop will focus on:
• Sharing new developments in the field of metadata and ontology,
• Finding out how to leverage these developments in practice in agricultural
information management.
The AOS workshop is organized by: the Scientech
Documentation and Information Center of Chinese Academy of Agricultural
Sciences (SDIC/CAAS), China and the Library and Documentation Systems
Division of FAO.

The AOS workshop will consist of Tutorials and Paper
Presentation Sessions
Tutorials
• Basics of Ontology
• Ontology Tools
Sessions
• From Thesauri to Ontologies - This session
focuses on migrating from thesauri to ontologies in the context of interoperability
and web application developments. It will introduce structural differences
between the two, interchange format issues and point out the advantages
of such a move. Moreover, the vision and structure of the planned AOS
concept server and its first achieved milestones and experimental results
will be presented.
• Automatic translation using semantic knowledge - Terminological
consistency, meaning, the use of the same term in the same sense all the
time is the prerequisite for successful automatic translation of documents.
This session focus on the role of domain-ontologies in multilingual natural
language processing.
• Metadata schemas - Ontologies provide formalized semantics
of objects and their relations to each other. Metadata schemas and ontologies
are very closely related. This session focuses on the role of metadata
its relation to Ontologies and the Semantic Web.
• The use of semantics to enhance access to domain knowledge
- This session provides illustrations of applications and application
prototypes that exploit semantic information encoded in such resources
as documents, thesauri, and ontologies. The objective is to provide concrete
examples and methodologies that can eventually be extended to the development
of live applications used in and for information management.
Anyone who wants to contribute to the outlined sessions
should contact the workshop organizers (Johannes.Keizer@fao.org).
