Second Agroecology Europe Youth Network meeting

Agroecology Europe Youth Network (AEEUYN) was created in September 2018 under the association Agroecology Europe (https://www.agroecology-europe.org/) and aims to connect young agroecologists to share information and to create new opportunities for them. AEEUYN aims to include anyone (with the criteria “if you feel young!”) with an interest or working in agroecology from production, distribution, social empowerment/inclusion, or political point of view. Nowadays this network counts with about 150 people from 36 different countries, with different backgrounds and interest across all aspects of agroecology. So far, two main actions have taken place: a first AEEUYN meeting held in La Bagaggera Organic Farm in Italy and the project “Mapping Agroecology in Europe”. The meeting constituted a perfect framework for the participants to share their experiences and to connect with one another. The mapping project was carried out in 12 European countries where many initiatives ranging from Participatory Guarantee Systems, short commercialization chains, agroecological field practices, seed banks, associations and research activities and many others where mapped.

Establishing an action plan for future activities of the AEEUYN as well as the organization of a good structure of the network is now the first priority. This is the main motivation to hold the second AEEUYN meeting, which will take place from the 27th to 29th of March 2020 in Aín, Sierra Espadán (Castellón, Spain), hosted by Connecta Natura Association (https://www.facebook.com/connectanatura/). Around 40 people from 7 different countries will be granted the opportunity to debate and share their views on diverse agroecological aspects as well as contribute to shape the structure and scope of the network with a participatory approach.

In an effort to adhere to agroecology principles and promote diversity, non-hierarchical structures and participation, the final schedule for the meeting has been designed to take the proposals made by the participants into account.  The basic aims are to define some ground features everyone can expect from and respect in the Network and to create an action plan that guides the AEEUYN’s next steps. Local agroecological initiatives will also be promoted before and during the meeting, trying to include not only people from across the continent but also local farmers, peasants and citizens.

This second meeting will surely serve the original purposes of bringing different actors and perspectives together, as well as reinforcing the Network and sharing useful experiences and information. In short, to create a movement, led by those whose young voices are usually disregarded, that promotes and expands agroecology throughout Europe.
