The Technical Agroecological Center of the South (CTAS): Agroecology in the extreme south of Madagascar

The Androy region, in southern Madagascar, is known as a semi-arid climate region, with high variability in rainfall and regularly suffers from droughts. As noted above, environmental issues (droughts, rainfall) drive several disturbances, affecting frequently the production systems in the region and livestock activities.   In response to climate vulnerability, there is an essential need to increase soil fertility to provide an adequate yield of crops in the region.

Therefore, there are several innovative solutions, aiming to maintain or restore the soil, by incorporating required certified plants that can withstand drought, while helping crop plots fertility.

The Technical Agroecological Center of the South (TACS) is a Malagasy NGO that aims to improve households' managing capacity to overcome climate disaster (drought, rainfall).  It focusses on promoting the use of agroecological methods in the field while creating environmental production systems that are drought resistant and beneficial. This video explains how the CTAS strategy uses multiple systems to disseminate knowledge about newly introduced plant species, for the purpose of breeding and seeds production, giving farmers access to varieties that are adapted to semi-arid region conditions.
