FAO promotes agroecology in Nicaragua

Iván León Ayala, FAO Representative in Nicaragua, talks about how agroecology could help the country to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals. He states that Nicaragua has a great potential to apply agroecological practices in different sectors, since a lot of work has been already done so far by farmers and civil society organizations, with the support of public policies. Requested by the government of Nicaragua, FAO is giving support to the update of the Nacional Policy on Agroecology and to the elaboration of a National Implementation Plan. The FAO representative advocates promoting the Participatory Guarantee System as a way to build trust among producers and consumers without raising the food prices. He also mentioned the Tool for Agroecology Performance Evaluation (TAPE), developed by FAO, which will be tested in Nicaragua soon, to generate evidence on the performance of these experiences in the country.
