The Minister of Agriculture of Sao Tome and Principe signs a 100% organic protocol to guarantee food security

On 22 May 2020, the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Rural Development, Francisco Ramos, signed a public-private partnership protocol entitled "100% Organic Sao Tome and Principe" aiming to guarantee the food and nutritional security of the country through production of nutritious and quality food for local and export markets. One of the main objectives of the project is to promote sustainable local food production through an integrated articulation of the production, marketing and consumption sectors. The Minister highlighted the importance of raising awareness about the implementation of agroecological practices, short circuit markets and food security and nutrition. Other objectives of the protocols are to valorize the production, processing, marketing and consumption of sustainable agricultural products through the promotion of national products with guaranteed organic quality; to synthetize the local agents of the economic, cultural and social importance of these products and to increase the exchange of experience with African countries.

In accordance with the will to transform the country in an island of 100% bio production, the Government intends to adopt public policies that stimulate organic production including measures to facilitate the access to  bio inputs, to reduce the use of synthetic inputs and import rates for these products, and promote local production of bio pesticides for the domestic market.

FAO is supporting the transition to agroecology by providing technical expertise to the Training Centre on Sustainable Family Farming and Agroecology located in Sao Tome and Principe. The Centre stems from a decision made by the Community of Portuguese Speaking Countries (CPSC) Summit Meeting in Lisbon in 2018, and all CPSC members with the objective to be a reference for the CPSC countries in capacity development by virtue of innovative teaching methods specially designed for the needs of the participants such as family farmers, government officials and NGOs. The teaching methods will take into consideration the traditional knowledge of the small famers of the region combined with the best science available in sustainable farming.
