Local neighborhood networks: agroecological response to food poverty in COVID-19 crisis

The situation caused by the COVID-19 pandemic has reinforced the need to create alternatives driven by agroecology and the social and solidarity economy. AlterBanc is an alliance between the networks of mutual neighborhood support and the Catalan agroecological peasantry in Spain. The initiative aims to deliver agroecological baskets (as a recipe for mutual aid) to families affected by the economic crisis caused by the pandemic. The benefit of this initiative bases on delivering to vulnerable people exposed to poverty, the necessary support tools to ensure a balanced and sustainable diet based on adequate supplies of healthy food. The beneficiary families are involved in the collection and distribution of food in the network. The public purchase of agroecology products covered by the Social Services (social dining rooms, school and public canteens, meals at home, and food aid) could upscale the local.
