Virtual Conference: International Agroecological Experiences on 26 Januray 2021

The cycle session, "Food self-sufficiency and technological innovation with sustainable practices," organized by the Ministry of Agriculture of Mexico, on ''International Agroecological Experiences'', was held on Tuesday, January 26 (Mexico, Australia, and Brazil) and  January 27 (India).

Program:

  • Greetings and welcome - Secretariat of Agriculture and Rural Development;
  • Introduction to the topic and presentation of speakers - Víctor Suárez Carrera, Vice Minister of Food and Competitiveness, Ministry of Agriculture, Mexico;
  • Work and agroecological experiences in Australia. Emphasis on soil and water - Walter Jehne, Soil microbiology expert and climate scientist, and Healthy Soils Australia founder;
  • Results of the implementation of sustainable agriculture: Andhra Pradesh case. Vijay Kumar, Advisor to the Andhra Pradesh State Department of Agriculture, India;
  • Agroecology in Brazil, Sebastiao Pinheiro, Brazilian agronomist and social researcher who has been a pioneer in developing agroecological proposals, seed banks, and permaculture in Latin America;
  • Audience questions and answers;
  • Final reflection - Victor Suarez Carrera.

The cycle began in 2019 and continued in 2020, with 19 conferences, 11 of them virtual, farmers, research scientists, academics, social representatives, and public officers.

The series of conferences aims to connect rural producers with scientists, technicians, academics, social organizations, and public officials to disseminate useful information to society and to promote dialogue between all the agents involved in rural issues, particularly those focused on food self-sufficiency with a focus on justice, sustainability, health, and competitiveness.

In this new cycle of conferences, producers had the opportunity to share in-depth insights into the practices and processes related to sustainability and agroecology undertaken from their land while entending to improve yields and restore soil nutrient health, reducing costs, and ensuring their local production.
