The New Rights of Peasants Declaration: A Landmark for the Right to Food Struggle

Formally adopted in 2018 by the General Assembly of the United Nations, the Declaration on the Rights of Peasants and Other People Working in Rural Areas is a landmark for the right to food of small-scale producers and the struggle for food sovereignty around the world.

FIAN International organizes this three-part webinar series. The normative and political contributions brought by UNDROP to the rights of women in rural areas, the fight for climate justice, and the right to seeds and biodiversity will be discussed. The speakers, Gabriela Valentín Díaz from the University of Miami, Nettie Webie from La Via Campesina and Fatou Camara from NAAFO-WFFP will foster dialogue with their expertise.

Session 1 - Rights of Women in Rural Areas:
In the thick of International Women’s Day & Beijing+25, legal scholars, women fisheries and human rights practitioners will assess the key messages furthering gender justice and women’s rights in UNDROP.

Session 2 - Climate Justice:
People’s human rights should be at the core of any solution for climate destruction. Social movements from different parts of the world will come together to discuss the interlinkages between the right to land, water and food adopted in UNDROP and the broader fight for global climate justice.

Session 3 - Right to Seeds and Biodiversity:
The right to seeds and biodiversity are now recognized and protected under UNDROP. Experts will evaluate the main contributions of the Declaration amid a challenging context of patenting and privatization of peasant seed systems.

The Webinar will be displayed on 18 March 2020 at 04:00PM (CET).
