ISSAE (International Summer School of Agroecology)

Agroecology concerns the integrative study of entire food systems, encompassing ecological, economic and social dimensions and involves design of individual farms using principles of ecology involving landscape, community and bioregion with emphasis on uniqueness of place and the people and other species inhabitating that place. Target groups are MSc and PhD students. The summer school is opened to a limited number of professionals.

After completing the course, the students should be able to: · Understand the multiple dimensions of agroecology, and their interaction; · Critically discuss elements of agroecological and sustainable transition of food systems; · Develop a personal practice of agroecology, develop a research project on agroecology or a professional project involving agroecology (e.g. dissemination, information).

Using an original learning concept, ISSAE has developed a specific pedagogical process to provide students and professionals tools to implement agroecology in action. Since 2015, an ERAMUS+ funding allows us to disseminate the ISSAE across Europe by organising it in Sweden (2016), Belgium (2017) and Spain (2018). The ISSAE Field Trip is a new training concept dedicated to professionals dealing with agroecological innovation. The first Content: The course consists of one week of scheduled work, and after that to write an essay stating if, how and why their representation of agroecology evolved during the course. Elements in the course are lectures held by a team of international teachers, farm visits, group work, problem-based learning, and report and essay writing. All scheduled activities, and essay writing, are compulsory.
