National Policy on Agroecology and Organic agriculture in Brazil

A figting path for a sustainable rural development

The report reviews the history and construction of the National Policy on Agroecology and Organic Production in Brazil (Política Nacional de Agroecologia e Produção Orgânica no Brasil, Pnapo), a policy that originated from the claims and initiatives from the sovil society and was collectively built.

Thanks to the newly created spaces for discussion after the restoration of democracy in Brazil, social movements linked to agroecology and organic production were able to include their demands in the public political agenda and to collaborate with the government into establishing national policies based on the sustainable development of rural communities.

The lessons from that process are captured in the report and are intended to serve as a testimony and as a reflexion about the model of development for the country and to contribute to the neverending process of perfecting the democratic process.
