Bringing local food to the city

The first farmers’ market (farmářský trh in Czech) in the Czech capital, Prague, was held in 2009 and since then demand for fresh locally-grown produce has continued to increase. Within two years, there were more than 13 farmers’ markets in the capital. Jana Spilkovà, an Assistant Professor of Social Geography and Regional Development at Prague’s Charles University said: “Farmers’ markets are the first real example of alternative food networks... in the Czech Republic. They illustrate the start of a noticeably new consumer and producer culture, created as concerns about food consumption, ethics, social diversity, and urban renewal come together.”
