لقد عُرّفت الزراعة الإيكولوجية بطرق عديدة، في أماكن عديدة، ومن قبل أصحاب مصلحة عديدين. ويستخدم العلماء والباحثون، منذ عشرينات القرن الماضي، مصطلح الزراعة الإيكولوجية للإشارة إلى تطبيق المبادئ الإيكولوجية على الزراعة. ولكن كان لا بد من انتظار أوائل الثمانينات حتى يطلق علماء البيئة والمهندسون الزراعيون والمتخصصون في علم النباتات الشعبي تسمية "الزراعة الإيكولوجية" على هذا التخصص.
وقامت المنظمة، بالنظر إلى هذه المجموعة الواسعة من التطبيقات المختلفة والفهم المختلف لمصطلح الزراعة الإيكولوجية، بتنظيم قاعدة بيانات خاصة بالتعريفات. وتتولى المنظمة جمع مختلف تعريفات الزراعة الإيكولوجية انطلاقاً من وثائق منشورة من تأليف علماء وأفراد من المجتمع المدني وأوساط أكاديمية وحكومات، ومن وثائق قانونية وسياسات، ضمن مصادر أخرى.
وتبيّن قاعدة البيانات هذه كيف يمكن للزراعة الإيكولوجية أن تكون متنوعة. ولكنّها تظهر أيضا أن التعاريف المختلفة تستخدم وتتقاسم عناصر مشتركة، يتم تكييفها مع الظروف المحلية. وتدرج المنظمة هذه العناصر المشتركة في إطارها المتعلق بالزراعة الإيكولوجية.
وإن إطار المنظمة الذي يتضمن 10 عناصر بشأن الزراعة الإيكولوجية مستمد من المبادئ المشتركة الخاصة بالزراعة الإيكولوجية، بما في ذلك مجموعة من العناصر البيولوجية الفيزيائية والاجتماعية الاقتصادية التي تقوم على ركائز التنمية المستدامة الثلاث - الاجتماعية والبيئية والاقتصادية. وقد تنطوي التشكيلات المختلفة على عناصر مختلفة، مع وجود خليط متين من الجوانب الاجتماعية والاقتصادية والبيئية.
