生态农业定义
农业生态学/生态农业在许多地方由许多不同利益相关者提出了多种形式的定义。上世纪20年代以来，科学家和研究人员就使用农业生态学/生态农业一词，意指将生态原则应用于农业。但是直到上世纪80年代初，生态学者、农学家、民族植物学家才命名了“农业生态”这一学科。
由于对农业生态学/生态农业这一说法的广泛应用和理解，粮农组织建立了一个定义数据库。粮农组织收集对农业生态学/生态农业的各种定义，来源包括由科学家、民间社会、学术机构和各国政府编写的已出版文件、法律文件和政策等。
该数据库表明农业生态学/生态农业所涉范围广泛，同时也表明在不同定义中因地制宜采用的共同要素。这些共同要素在粮农组织农业生态学/生态农业框架中得到体现。
粮农组织的农业生态学/生态农业10个要素框架根据所提出的农业生态学共同原则制定，综合考虑了基于社会、经济、环境这三大可持续发展支柱的生物物理和社会经济要素。不同要素可能在各种配置中发挥作用，使社会、经济、环境方面密切结合。
