تؤدي الأدوية المضادة للميكروبات دوراً حاسماً في علاج الأمراض، واستخدامها ضروري لحماية صحة الإنسان والحيوان. ومع ذلك، يساء في كثير من الأحيان استعمالها في علاج الأمراض والوقاية منها في قطاع الإنتاج الحيواني وفي تربية الأحياء المائية وإنتاج المحاصيل. وترتبط هذه الأفعال في كثير من الأحيان باحتمالات ظهور وتفشي كائنات دقيقة مقاومة للأدوية المضادة للميكروبات.
