World Antimicrobial Awareness Week 2020: Sounding the alarm that AMR is here and now

18/11/2020

Today marks the start of World Antimicrobial Awareness Week (WAAW) 2020.

WAAW is a week of global action, events and activities to raise awareness of the issue of antimicrobial resistance (AMR). The annual campaign takes place on 18-24 November led by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), the World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE) and the World Health Organization (WHO).

The theme of FAO’s WAAW campaign is:

AMR is here and now: United to strengthen food systems and secure livelihoods.

This theme has been chosen to highlight that AMR is not only a future threat; it is already affecting lives and livelihoods.

WAAW Events

There are a number of events and activities taking place at both a regional and HQ level during WAAW. Highlights include:

  • WAAW Africa Twitter Chat on ‘How can we improve awareness for antimicrobial resistance in Africa?’ on 21 November
  • ‘Innovation webinar: Launch of the AMR Behaviour Change Community of Practice’ on 23 November.
  • Technical Seminar on Aquaculture Biosecurity: Understanding Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR) in Aquaculture on 23-24 November
