Emergency assistance to small & marginal farmers affected by floods in north-west districts.

15 Nov 2012 -- Emergency assistance to support the recovery of crop-based livelihood systems of small and marginal farmers affected by late monsoon floods in north-west districts of Kurigram, Gaibandha, Bogra, Sirajganj and Jamalpur

On October 30th, 2012, the FAO Technical Cooperation Programme approved an emergency project entitled: Emergency assistance to support the recovery of crop-based livelihood systems of small and marginal farmers affected by late monsoon floods in north-west districts of Kurigram, Gaibandha, Bogra, Sirajganj and Jamalpur, for a total budget of USD 423,000.

This project comes as a response to heavy rains which hit the north and north-west parts of Bangladesh in late September 2012, causing flooding and displacement. Numerous low-lying districts, in particular those of Bogra, Gaibandha, Jamalpur, Kurigram and Sirajgonj, were inundated due to the torrential rain and rising water levels in the rivers, with subsequent repercussions on the agricultural and employment sectors for the local population. <more>
