Launch of the Asia-Pacific Regional Overview of Food Security and Nutrition 2022 – Urban Food Systems and Nutrition
With the 5F crisis – lack of food, feed, fuel, fertilizer and finance pushing millions more people in the world’s most populous region into hunger and poverty, four specialized agencies of the United Nations are calling for urgent coordinated efforts to address the impacts this crisis will have on economies, households and people, particularly women and children in the Asia-Pacific region.
This clarion call is part of a joint report titled, Asia-Pacific Overview of Food Security and Nutrition 2022 that will be published by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), World Food Programme (WFP) and the World Health Organization (WHO). The joint flagship report will be launched at a virtual event on Tuesday, 24 January 2023 at 11 a.m (Bangkok-GMT+7).
The Asia-Pacific Overview of Food Security and Nutrition 2022 (#SOFI2022) draws particular attention to urban food security and nutrition, highlighting how rapid rates of migration to cities and an increase in low-income settlements, compounded by rising food prices are making access to healthy diets more difficult.
The report finds that a healthy diet is unaffordable in most countries of Asia and the Pacific for nearly two billion inhabitants (1.9 billion persons, which is 44.5 percent of the region’s population). The latest figures of undernourishment, child wasting and stunting, overweight and obesity also paint a grim picture of the regions progress towards achieving the Sustainable Development Goals.
The launch of the report - Asia-Pacific Overview of Food Security and Nutrition 2022 will be followed by a panel discussion featuring:
Dr Azucena M. Dayanghirang, Assistant Secretary and Executive Director, National Nutrition Council, Department of Health, Philippines
Dr H. Moeldoko, Chief of Staff to the President of Indonesia, and special advisor on food security related issues for the President
Brig. Gen. Md. Zobaidur Rahman, Chief Medical Officer, Dhaka North City Corporation, Bangladesh
